The determination of yarn count is a very essential aspect. For determination of Yarn Count Ikon Industries, Mumbai, India has developed a balance called as Direct Yarn Count Balance also known as Knowell’s Balance and an Electronic Count Balance.
Knowell’s Balance : The balance is fitted with two pans marked left and right with respective hangers at the end of the beam and with a graduated plate with seven ranges A to G fixed on a sliding stand. The lea of the yarn is to be kept on the right pan and the weights provided on the left pan and also the corresponding rider weight on the beam. After placing the weights and the lea raise the beam on its fulcrum. Move the rider weight on the beam till the pointer is set on zero. The figure received on the scale corresponding to the rider weight is the count of yarn. Electronic Count Balance: This is an Electronic Balance with a Range : 0 – 120gms and Accuracy : 0.001gm with an Additional Software for Direct value of Yarn Count which on a button press would show the Yarn Count of 120 yards length Lea.

The crimp in a yarn is defined as the mean difference between the actual length of any yarn and its apparent length in the fabric after weaving . It is usually expressed as a percentage of the apparent length of the yarn in the fabric .
Determination of the crimp of yarn is carried out by marking a known length on the fabric, removing the market yarn in such a manner that it does not loose its twist, holding it between two grips at the marked points, and slowly extending it till it is subjected to a specified straightening tension . The increase in length of the yarn is determined and expressed as a percentage of marked length to obtain the value of crimp.
IKON Crimp Tester is designed to determine the crimp of yarns taken out of fabrics . One end of the yarn is held in a pivoted loading grip on which the desired tension load is applied by means of a sliding weight acting on a lever arm, while the other end is held in a movable grip which is mounted on a screw and can move along the direction of the yarn, stretching it in the process . The distance moved through by this grip gives the extension of the yarn , and can be measured on a scale fixed by the side of the grip assembly .
The loading grip is pivoted on jewel bearing and mounted on a sliding platform which can be moved towards or away from the moving grip to enable different marked lengths of yarn to be tested . The test length is indicated on a scale fixed on the base of the apparatus against a pointer fixed to the sliding platform .
The yarns is held in between the two grips and pulled by moving the movable grip away from the loading grip . The tension under which the crimp is to be determined is set on the pendulum by moving the sliding weight and is indicated on a load scale . When the yarn is under the specified tension , the pendulum lifts off its support , thus breaking a contact and turning off a low voltage indicator light . The elongation of the yarn when the light just goes off is noted , from which the value of percentage crimp can be calculated .
The apparatus is finished in grey hammer tone stoving painting and bright chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.

Tensile strength and elongation are the two prime characteristics of most of the raw materials, whether they are metals, or non metals such as foam, rubber, leather, textiles, plastic, paper or finished products such as rods, ropes, yarns, belts etc. This two properties often play a major role in determining the suitability of any raw materials for specified application. It is therefore, of utmost importance to determine these characteristics accurately, conveniently and quickly. The “IKON” Single yarn strength meter provides a relatively inexpensive way for determining the Tensile Strength and elongation of Cotton, Jute, Silk Yarn in single strand. They are based on constant rate of traverse principle, in which one end of the test specimen is held in a stationery grip while the other end is moved at a known fixed speed with the help of a motor, gear box and screw arrangement.
The load exerted on the stationary grip is measured by a load cell and a digital indicator. The digital indicator has a peak hold facility to indicate breaking load, tare facility for using various grips. The elongation of the test specimen is measured on a linear scale fixed on the frame of the tester which indicates the distance between the grips. Changing the belt on a set of V belt pulleys can change the speed of traverse of the lower grip.
The frame of the test is fabricated from heavy mild steel section to give it the required rigidity and strength. Various built in safety arrangements such as over and over travel protection, and automatically stopping of the motor on failure of the test specimen are provided
Single yarn strength tester is finished in dark enameled painting and bright chrome / zinc plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish. The tester is supplied complete with electrical, which includes micro-switches, push buttons and contactors for safe and convenient operation.

Lea strength tester is used for determining the Tensile Strength and Elongation of Cotton, Wool, Jute and other textile materials in form of skein. The strength is determined in such a manner that the test specimen is gripped by two lea holders vertically arranged one below the other and continuously tensile stressed until it breaks. Elongation is also determined at the same time i.e. extension of the specimen held between the grips during the tensile test. The machine consists of a sturdy metal plate base with load measuring unit fixed at the top and the driving assembly fitted at the bottom. An electric motor transmits power to the lead screw through gear box. The pendulum rod is connected with the upper lea holder through main boss.
Lea strength tester comes in four different capacities viz. 100 LBS, 200 LBS, 300 LBS & 500 LBS. A suitable capacity of Lea Strength Tester may be selected prior to order. If the count is known and the strength is determined with the help of “IKON” Lea Strength Tester, by multiplying both the values i.e. COUNT x strength in LBS determines CSP (Count Strength Product).
