Compression set at constant strain is defined as difference between the original thickness of the test piece and that after recovery expressed as percentage of the initially applied compression. It measures the ability of vulcanized rubbers to retain their elastic properties after prolonged compression under constant strain. The compression set is determined by subjecting test specimens in shape of cylindrical discs to a constant strain for a given time at the specified temperature, after allowing them to recover.
The “IKON” Compression Set Apparatus for testing under constant strain is designed to determine compression set of vulcanized natural and synthetic rubbers. This apparatus is available in two models described below :
1) PLATES TYPE :
Consists of four austenitic steel plates, having flat and parallel ground faces. The plates are held together by a pair of high tensile steel Allen bolts. Ring type spacers of specified thickness made of magnetic stainless steel are provided to give the specified compression to the specimen under test. All the components are supplied in a wooden carrying case.
2) PLATES TYPE WITH BASE PLATE AND HAND WHEEL ARRANGEMENT :
Consists of four stainless steel plates as above fitted in a fixture having a rigid base plate and are guided on a pair of vertical rods. The spacers are also guided on the same rods and are provided with springs to increase space between the plates for inserting the specimens. The specimens are compressed with the help of a screw rotated by a handwheel. The whole arrangement enables quick application of compression load on the specimen.
Both the models are compact and can be placed inside an oven for conducting tests at elevated temperature.

Peel or adhesion testing is the measurement of the adhesive or bond strength between two materials. It is performed by applying a tension load to the materials on one of three different ways: |
Pulling two flexible materials axially away from each other forming what is called a 'T' peel |
Pulling a flexible material away from a non-flexible material or substrate, both held vertically, forming what is called a 180 degree peel |
Pulling a flexible material away from a non-flexible material or substrate, which is held horizontally, forming what is called a 90 degree peel |
For example separating the backing from an adhesive bandage would be a 'T' peel, pulling the back of a blister pack of tablets would be either a 90 degree or 180 degree peel and pulling the seal from the top of a yoghurt pot would be a 90 degree peel. There are varying degrees of flexibility and shapes creating a wide range of variations of these three basic peel types, requiring a variety of test grips and fixtures.
Benefits of Peel/Adhesion Testing
Ensuring the integrity and safety of products |
Ensuring the proper functioning of adhesive seals e.g. openability |
Reducing material costs and achieving lean manufacturing goals |
Compliance with industry standards |

Compression set tests is intended to measure the ability of rubber compounds to retain elastic properties after prolonged action of a known compressive stress under static loading.
The “IKON” Compression Set Apparatus for determination of compression set characteristics under constant stress consists of a calibrated loading spring, a set of carbon steel ground and chromium plated plates, and a screw arrangement to compress the spring. The apparatus is assembled over a rigid metallic base and is portable.
The test specimens are kept between plates and the load applied by compressing the spring. Load acting on the test specimens can be read from a graph which gives the value of load against spring deflections which is indicated by a pointer on the scale fixed to the tester. The whole assembly can be kept in an oven to carry out tests at elevated temperature.
The apparatus is finished in dark grey hammer-tone painting and bright chrome plating to give it a corrosion resistant finish.
Molding and cutting dies for obtaining test specimens and thickness guage for checking the thickness of the specimens are available as optional accessories.

A measure of the indentation resistance of elastomeric or rubber materials based on the depth of penetration of a ball indentor. An initial contact force is applied to an indentor and the penetration is set to zero. The force is increased to a specified total load and the depth of penetration is measured. The IRHD value is related to the depth of indentor penetration. For highly elastic materials, IRHD and Shore A are comparable. An IRHD value of 0 represents a material with an Young's Modulus of zero and an IRHD value of 100 represents a material with an infinite Young's Modulus.
